Visit to Abbotsford Convent

Event, originally planned for 2019, being attempted to be rescheduled to a  date in possibly in April 2020

Visit to the Abbotsford Convent is located in Abbotsford, Victoria, an inner city suburb of Melbourne, Australia.
The Convent is in a bend of the Yarra River west of Yarra Bend Park, with the Collingwood Children’s Farm to its north and east, the river and parklands to its south and housing to its west.

A visit to the Abbotsford Convent, 1 St Heliers Street, Abbotsford is being arranged .  Hopefully there will be enough people interested in a tour of this very interesting heritage listed historic site.  A farmers market will also be operating [about 10 min walk away] on the day.
We will have lunch at one of the four eateries on the site.

This will be a very interesting and enjoyable day.

About the site
Just four kilometres from Melbourne’s CBD and spread over 16 acres, the Abbotsford Convent – with its 11 historic buildings and gardens – is Australia’s largest multi-arts precinct. The former Convent of the Good Shepherd, this ex-monastic site is now owned by the Abbotsford Convent Foundation (ACF) – a not-for-profit organisation that operates the Abbotsford Convent on behalf of the public.

Today, the Convent is home to over 100 studios, two galleries, cafes, a radio station, a school, and an abundance of green open space. Each year the Convent welcomes a diverse range of art projects, rehearsals, workshops, exhibitions, markets, events and festivals.   See site Map below……

If enough people are interested a tour guide can be arranged just for our group [if one is available, need a minimum of ten people]

On the tour you will discover the diverse history of the Convent; from its use as a meeting point for the Kulin Nation, to its days as a convent when the Good Shepherd Sisters ran a closed monastic site for over a century, and how it came to be the leading arts, culture and education community it is today. Living memories have been collected from former residents and caretakers of the land, which volunteer tour guides share as you explore hidden pockets of the Convent.

Cost of tour.  $12.50 per person concession, or.
                      $15.00 per person adult.

Running Time: 90 Minutes.

Getting there
Choice is by public transport or by carpooling.

Public Transport will take about 2 hours each way and involves train, bus and some walking approx. 15 minutes.

Carpooling will take approximately 1 hour each way. Pay car park is opposite convent.

The Collingwood Children’s Farm Farmers Market [10 min walk from Convent] will be operating on the day from 8.00am to 1.00pm.

For those intending to shop at the Abbotsford Market , remember their market is plastic bag free. So get in the swing and BYO!
