Further to the commemoration at Lillydale Lake, [last Sunday] a further memorial plaque will be unveiled at Mount Mary near Coldstream.  This was the site of a training battle exercise between two sides.

Reports of the Mt Mary Battle are as follows

“The Ballarat Courier Monday 14th February 1914 Daily Edition”

“War broke out to-day near Lilydale between Red and White forces represented by tile 13th Infantry Brigade under the direction of Col J. Monash. and the 5lst Infantry Battalion (formerly the Scottish Regiment commanded by Lt Col D. S. Woanliht. Early in the morning the Southland (Red) troops, bivouacked at Lilydale, so as to oppose an attempt on the part of Northland (White) forces to enter Southland. The enemy, with headquarters at Marysville. was reputed to be en-route to a force of infantry at Healesville. The Southland troops with Melbourne for their capital city, moved towards the site by way of the Coldstream and Yerringberg roads. The brigade had been ordered to operate so as to oppose any attempt on the part of the Northland force to enter Southland and also to rort the movement from Melbourne to Lilydale of additional force mobilizing at Lilydale. The main body passed the corner of the camp and Abihort road at 7.45 a.m. The advance guard met with opposition in the vicinity of Coombe Cottage on Coldstream road. There was sharp fighting, with the enemy retiring to near Mount Mary. An attack by the Southland troops on Mount Mary was repulsed after  fierce fighting. Then the troops retreated from the attack on the Mount, and withdrew to Lilydale.”
